At Securityplus Federal Credit Union, the spirit of service doesn’t stop at words, it shows up in action. On January 28, 2026, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, team members from across the organization came together to pack 500 food bags for children and families facing food insecurity in partnership with the
Baltimore Hunger Project.
Held at the Securityplus headquarters, this annual Day of Service was more than a volunteer event, it was a hands-on expression of the credit union’s CARES values: Collaboration, Agility, Respect, Excellence, and Spirit. With sleeves rolled up and hearts aligned, Securityplus employees demonstrated what it means to turn purpose into practice by supporting vulnerable students and families across Baltimore.
Why MLK Day Matters to Securityplus
The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful change starts with community. His call to service, justice, and equity continues to inspire generations, and at Securityplus, his message resonates deeply with our mission of “people helping people.”
“At Securityplus, service isn’t something we talk about; it’s something we do,” said Mike Barr, Chief Executive Officer of Securityplus Federal Credit Union. “Coming together on MLK Day to pack food bags for children reflects our values in action. When we show up for families in our community, we honor Dr. King’s legacy and strengthen the places we all call home.”
This year’s Day of Service was a reminder that even small, consistent acts of kindness, like packing a bag of snacks and supplies, can have a transformational effect on someone’s day, education, or sense of belonging.
Partnering with the Baltimore Hunger Project
The
Baltimore Hunger Project (BHP) has long been a trusted partner in the fight against childhood hunger. Their mission is rooted in closing the weekend hunger gap for food-insecure children in Baltimore by providing weekend food bags, birthday kits, and encouraging notes of support.
Securityplus was proud to support BHP’s mission again this year, assembling 500 carefully curated food bags to be delivered to students who rely on consistent access to meals when school is not in session.
These bags go beyond basic nutrition; they are packed with love and intention. Each one contains a weekend’s worth of nonperishable items, ensuring that children can focus on learning rather than their next meal. And every child who receives one knows that someone in their community cares.
Employees in Action: A Culture of Compassion
The Day of Service was coordinated by Obinna “Obi” Ndukwe, Chief People & Impact Officer, who emphasized the cultural importance of staying rooted in service.
“MLK Day is not a day off, it’s a day on,” said Obi. “This event is part of our larger vision for how corporate citizenship should look: local, impactful, and human-centered.”
Throughout the morning, employees from various departments came together, many volunteering for the second or third year in a row, to pack bags, organize supplies, and write heartfelt notes to children. It was a vibrant, team-led demonstration of Securityplus’ commitment to creating lasting impact through community engagement.
Why Food Insecurity Still Matters
In Baltimore, 1 in 4 children face food insecurity, a statistic that becomes even more urgent when schools close for long weekends or holidays. For many students, school is the one place they can count on for a hot meal.
Events like the MLK Day Food Bag Packing remind us that while hunger is a systemic issue, local partnerships and grassroots action make a real difference.
The ripple effects are significant. Students who are well-fed are more likely to show up, stay focused, and succeed in the classroom. Families receiving support report less stress and more stability. And volunteers walk away with a renewed sense of purpose and connection to their community.
Our Continued Commitment to Service
Securityplus Federal Credit Union believes that building financial wellness must go hand-in-hand with community wellness. That’s why the credit union continues to invest in volunteerism, impact-driven partnerships, and initiatives that support underserved communities throughout the year, not just on MLK Day.
Whether it’s through partnerships like
Baltimore Hunger Project, financial education at local colleges, or hosting community drives and donation events, Securityplus shows up where people need support most.
As the organization looks ahead to more service events in 2026 and beyond, the Day of Service stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished when values and action align.
