Serving with Purpose: Securityplus FCU Volunteers Honor MLK Day by Supporting Local Students

Written by | Securityplus FCU
Every January, the nation pauses to reflect on the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who championed justice, service, and equality. At Securityplus Federal Credit Union, honoring Dr. King’s legacy goes beyond remembrance, it means taking action.

As part of the 2026 MLK Weekend of Service, Securityplus team members partnered with The Student Support Network and United Way of Central Maryland to volunteer their time assembling critical support kits for students across the region. The initiative took place on Monday, January 19, at the organization’s Timonium-based distribution site and focused on packing weekend food bags, laundry pod packs, and period product kits.

These everyday items may seem small, but they are essential for students facing economic hardship. For many young people in Baltimore City and Baltimore County, something as simple as clean clothes or access to food can be the difference between staying in school or falling behind.

Putting Mission into Motion

Representing Securityplus on-site were:
  • Tymeshia Alleyne, Onboarding Experience Coordinator
  • Angela Nelson, Senior Loan Operations Specialist
  • Felita Vaughn, Financial Service Representative II
  • Shelton Hunter, Member Support Representative II
  • Jessica Taylor, Senior Business Services Specialist
Together, they gave their time and energy to ensure students received the support needed to show up at school with dignity, confidence, and hope.

“This experience was a powerful reminder that small acts of service can have a meaningful impact on a student’s day and their ability to focus on learning,” said Tymeshia Alleyne. “Knowing these kits will support students and families in practical ways makes the work especially meaningful.”

Securityplus Federal Credit Union has always embraced the credit union philosophy of people helping people, and this day of service showcased that value in full force.

Why This Work Matters

The Student Support Network serves students living in poverty in more than 20 schools across Central Maryland. They supply essentials that many of us take for granted—food for the weekend, personal hygiene items, socks, underwear, and more.

By providing these necessities, the organization helps students avoid the shame, stress, and instability that often accompany material hardship. The kits packed by Securityplus and other volunteers are carefully curated with compassion and designed to directly remove the barriers that prevent children from fully participating in school life.

United Way of Central Maryland, a longtime partner of Securityplus, helped power the MLK Weekend of Service to bring together local businesses, nonprofits, and volunteers with a shared mission of advancing equity and opportunity.

Living the Legacy of Dr. King

Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” For Securityplus, the answer lies in ongoing partnerships, consistent community investment, and employee-led volunteerism.

“Our participation in the MLK Weekend of Service is not just symbolic, it’s a reflection of our continued commitment to lifting up the communities we serve,” said Obinna “Obi” Ndukwe, Chief People & Impact Officer at Securityplus. “This type of outreach empowers our team to lead with compassion and impact.”

Dr. King’s dream of a just, equitable society is built on shared responsibility, and the Securityplus team believes that service is a year-round commitment, not a one-day event.

Service as a Cornerstone of Culture

Securityplus Federal Credit Union has a strong tradition of community engagement. From supporting food insecurity initiatives like the Baltimore Hunger Project to providing financial education in schools and hosting drives for underserved families, the credit union is constantly finding new ways to give back.

This commitment is woven into the fabric of the organization. Employees are encouraged to take part in volunteer opportunities, lead outreach efforts, and build authentic relationships with nonprofit partners that directly serve Baltimore’s most vulnerable communities.

Looking Forward

Securityplus Federal Credit Union remains committed to fostering resilience, dignity, and hope through service. The MLK Day of Service is one of many annual touchpoints, but it carries extra weight, it reminds us that collective action is powerful and that no act of kindness is too small.

As we continue through 2026, the Securityplus team will build on this momentum by supporting even more local families and youth through thoughtful partnerships, inclusive programming, and employee-led volunteerism.

Because when we serve, we don’t just change lives, we change the world around us.
