When it comes to building stronger communities, the most powerful impact often starts with simply showing up. At Securityplus Federal Credit Union, we believe that access, whether to education, financial resources, or opportunity, begins with presence. That belief guided our participation in the Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) Organizational Involvement Fair on January 15, 2026.
Held on BCCC’s vibrant campus in the heart of Baltimore, the Organizational Involvement Fair brought together students, faculty, community leaders, and mission-driven organizations to support student success both inside and beyond the classroom.
Showing Up With Purpose
Securityplus Federal Credit Union was represented by a dynamic team of community-focused leaders:
- Obinna “Obi” Ndukwe, Chief People and Impact Officer
- Sheryl Phelps, Member Experience Manager
- Erin Thompson, Human Resources Generalist II
The team engaged directly with students and faculty to discuss financial wellness, career opportunities, and the role of credit unions in supporting life goals at every stage. Whether it was answering questions about savings accounts, student credit-building, or future employment at the credit union, the Securityplus team focused on one thing: building trust through meaningful conversation.
“When we meet people in spaces where they are actively building their futures, the impact is immediate and lasting,” said Erin Thompson. “It is about access, trust, and making sure students know there are institutions invested in their success.”
From sharing budgeting tips to demystifying credit scores, our presence at BCCC was more than a tabling event, it was an opportunity to empower the next generation with tools for long-term financial stability.
Why Events Like This Matter
Baltimore City Community College plays a vital role in educating and uplifting local talent. As an affordable, accessible institution serving a diverse student population, BCCC helps students chart new paths, whether that means earning a degree, building a career, or transferring to a four-year institution.
The college’s Organizational Involvement Fairs are designed to expand student horizons by connecting them with organizations that can offer resources, support, and real-world opportunities. For many students, these events are their first point of contact with potential employers or financial institutions that genuinely care about their future.
For Securityplus, it’s also a chance to embody our commitment to the people we serve by being present, not just as a financial institution, but as a neighbor, ally, and advocate.
Presence That Builds Impact
Securityplus Federal Credit Union has long focused on community outreach that addresses both financial and social well-being. From high school financial education workshops to volunteering at local nonprofits, our team is constantly working to close opportunity gaps and provide members with the tools they need to succeed.
“At Securityplus, we don’t just talk about community impact, we live it,” said Obi Ndukwe, Chief People and Impact Officer. “Being part of events like the BCCC Organizational Involvement Fair is one of the ways we bridge the gap between intention and action.”
Our presence on campus gave students a chance to learn more about:
- Financial education: including budgeting basics, savings tips, and credit-building strategies
- Membership benefits: including low-fee checking, savings accounts, and youth financial products
- Career opportunities: from internships to full-time roles across departments
- Community programs: such as our partnerships with local nonprofits and support of underserved neighborhoods
Whether a student needed help opening their first account or wanted to explore a career in finance, we were there to offer guidance and encouragement.
Expanding Access to Careers
In addition to offering financial guidance, our team shared insights on working in the credit union industry, a space that values community, innovation, and service. For many students, learning about careers at Securityplus opened new doors.
From frontline member service roles to back-office operations in IT, marketing, and lending, credit unions like Securityplus offer diverse career paths that align with a variety of skills and aspirations. Our recruiters provided resources on how to apply, what we look for in candidates, and how students can grow professionally within our organization.
“For us, these events are as much about recruiting as they are about mentoring,” said Sheryl Phelps, Member Experience Manager. “We want students to see that there’s a place for them here, whether they’re banking with us or working alongside us.”
Continuing the Conversation
Our day at BCCC reminded us of what’s possible when institutions show up not just to promote, but to listen, learn, and build relationships. Every handshake, conversation, and shared smile reinforced our belief that financial empowerment is personal, and that real change begins with connection.
We are proud to continue investing in Baltimore’s future, one student and one conversation at a time.
